PhilHealth Sponsored (Indigent) status: how to check if it’s still active and how to update it

Key points

  • Sponsored (Indigent) means someone else, like your LGU or DSWD, pays your PhilHealth premium.
  • If you're not in Listahanan or 4Ps/MCCT, the sponsorship may end on December 31 of the covered year.
  • A 2025 sponsorship is not automatically active in 2026.
  • Check your current record in the PhilHealth Member Portal or at a PhilHealth LHIO.
  • To be sponsored again, go through your barangay or LGU and the MSWDO or CSWDO.

If your PhilHealth membership category says Sponsored (Indigent), someone else pays your premium. But that sponsorship does not always carry over year to year. If you last used PhilHealth back in 2021, or you simply have not checked in a while, this guide explains what Sponsored status means, whether it expires, how to check if it is still active, and what to do if it is not. There is no application deadline; check your record any time, ideally before you need to use your benefits.

Last updated: October 12, 2026. Rules can change, so confirm your exact status with PhilHealth or the agency or LGU that sponsored you.

What “Sponsored (Indigent)” means

A Sponsored member is someone whose PhilHealth premium is paid by another entity, not by the member. Depending on the program and your classification, the sponsor can be:

  • Your LGU (city, municipality or province)
  • The DSWD
  • The National Government
  • Another sponsoring entity or agency

Some government-sponsored members are covered because they are in Listahanan or the 4Ps/MCCT program. Not every Sponsored (Indigent) member is, though. Others are covered through an LGU endorsement, a social welfare assessment or another sponsoring arrangement. That difference matters when it comes to expiry.

Does Sponsored status expire?

It depends on who sponsors you and how.

  • Not in Listahanan or 4Ps/MCCT: the sponsorship may have a set coverage period, usually until December 31 of the covered year.
  • So a 2025 sponsorship is not automatically active in 2026. You may need a new validation, endorsement or reapplication to be sponsored again.
  • Listahanan or 4Ps/MCCT members fall under a different arrangement, so do not assume the same rule applies to every Sponsored member.

How to check if your status is still active

Look at your current PhilHealth membership record, not an old MDR or PhilHealth ID.

Option 1: PhilHealth Member Portal

Log in to the PhilHealth Member Portal to see your membership record and Member Data Record (MDR).

Option 2: PhilHealth LHIO

If the record is unclear or you cannot get into the portal, go to the nearest PhilHealth Local Health Insurance Office (LHIO). Say you want to verify the current status of your Sponsored (Indigent) membership. This is more reliable than relying on an old MDR or ID card.

If your sponsorship is no longer active

If you are not covered by Listahanan or 4Ps and need to be sponsored again, you will likely go through your LGU or a sponsoring agency for assessment and endorsement.

  1. Barangay or LGU. You may need a Certificate of Indigency or another certification, depending on your LGU. Tell them it is for updating your PhilHealth Sponsored (Indigent) membership.
  2. MSWDO or CSWDO. You may be referred to the Municipal or City Social Welfare and Development Office for assessment. This can include an interview, a financial assessment, a social case study or assessment if needed, and verification of your situation.
  3. Endorsement. If approved, you may be given an endorsement or certification for sponsorship, which you bring to PhilHealth.

If it is an emergency and you are already in the hospital

  • Go to the hospital’s Medical Social Service (MSS) right away and say you need your PhilHealth status checked.
  • PhilHealth has ways to enroll or update qualified patients in certain situations, including Point-of-Service (POS) arrangements in applicable facilities.
  • The hospital social worker will tell you if this applies to your case and what you need to do.
  • For qualified cases, PhilHealth benefits and No Balance Billing protection may apply, depending on your membership category, the facility and current PhilHealth rules.

Documents to bring

  • PhilHealth ID, if you have one
  • Valid government ID
  • PMRF (PhilHealth Member Registration Form), if required
  • Certificate of Indigency, if asked
  • Endorsement or certification from the sponsoring agency or LGU, if applicable

Requirements can differ depending on the sponsoring arrangement and why you are updating.

When you should check your record

  • You now have a job
  • You have started a business
  • You were sponsored last year and want to know if you are still covered this year
  • You have not used your PhilHealth membership in a long time
  • You are about to use a PhilHealth benefit and are unsure of your status

If your situation has changed, update your membership information so it matches your current category.

Reminder

Being a Sponsored (Indigent) member before does not automatically mean the same sponsorship is active now, especially if you are not in Listahanan or 4Ps, where coverage can depend on the sponsoring arrangement and its coverage period. The safest move is to check your current PhilHealth record so you know whether you need to update or get sponsored again.

Questions people ask

I was Sponsored in 2025. Am I still covered in 2026?

Not automatically. If you are not in Listahanan or 4Ps, your sponsorship may have ended on December 31, 2025. Check the Member Portal or your LHIO.

Are all Sponsored members part of 4Ps or Listahanan?

No. Some are sponsored through an LGU endorsement, a social welfare assessment or another arrangement.

Where do I get a Certificate of Indigency?

From your barangay or LGU, depending on local requirements. Say it is for a PhilHealth Sponsored (Indigent) update.

Can I fix my status while already confined?

Possibly. Ask the hospital’s Medical Social Service about Point-of-Service enrollment if the facility offers it.

Is my old PhilHealth ID or MDR proof that I am active?

No. Always check your current record online or at the LHIO.
